News Special — 21 January 2012

Samsung has yet again released an attack ad against Apple promoting their new Galaxy S II, this one introducing a new term: Samsunged. The Korean company is obviously going for the Google approach by making their company’s name into a verb (like Googled). I am assuming that to be “Samsunged” means that you, being an Apple fanboy, have just been shown up by a Samsung device, but I will let you decide for yourself.

Their commercial blatantly makes fun of those who would wait in line for hours for a phone, but there are also a few things that you have to watch closely to pick up on. For one, you can hear one of the guys in line say “Awww, that looks like last years phone.” This is an obvious jab at not only the need for iPhone users to have a recognizably newer iPhone in order to feel more important than others, but also the fact that Apple did not change up their design this year. The second of Samsung’s punches is when a fanboy’s friend (who has a Samsung Galaxy S II) comes by to give his roommate his charger. This obviously hints at the 4S’s bad battery life. Well played Samsung.

The next thing I picked up on (and maybe this is just because of film study) is the shot of a fanboy looking through the fence. The way it is framed gives the appearance that he is in jail and thus, figuratively trapped by Apple’s ecosystem. Whoever is behind this commercial definitely knows their stuff.

After the people waiting in line find out that the Galaxy 2 II has native turn-by-turn navigation (a feature iPhones do not), one of them says “Awww, we just got Samsunged,” with jealousy in their voice. I’m not sure if this term will ever take off, but perhaps it will be whispered between Android users in dark alleys or wherever they hang out.
